影片背景设定在处于混乱和崩溃边缘的2045年，现实世界令人失望，人们将救赎的希望寄托于“绿洲”，一个由鬼才詹姆斯·哈利迪(马克·里朗斯 饰)一手打造的虚拟游戏宇宙。在那里，想象力主宰一切，你可以去任何地方，做任何想做的事，成为任何想成为的人。
